Reducing Animal Suffering: Humane Slaughter Solutions in Ghana

The Wacpaw/EonA team traveled to Cape Coast, Ghana, earlier this month to instruct Meat Unit employees and Meat Science students on how to humanely catch and handle chickens before slaughter. In order to guarantee that birds are rendered unconscious before to slaughter, we have built pneumatic poultry stunning equipment. A large amount of the meat consumed in the Cape Coast Metropolis is supplied by the University of Cape Coast’s Meat Unit.
Basic chicken behavior and various handling approaches were initially shown to the participants. The upright catching method was highlighted because it causes far less stress and suffering for the birds than grabbing them by the legs and holding them upside down. Additionally, we showed how to put the birds into the cones so that they would be stunned before their throats were cut, initially making them insensitive to pain.
We gave the participants a walkthrough of the full procedure before assisting them with independent practice. After showing the participants the full procedure, we assisted them as they practiced independently. Employees and students experienced a sense of empowerment and a greater comprehension of the importance of these compassionate methods in reducing animal suffering.
During their break, three female students indicated an interest in working for WACPAW to promote humane chicken handling in their localities. To make sure they are ready to interact with nearby farms and slaughterhouses, we will give them additional training.
Sincere thanks were given by the university administration to EonA for supporting the training and giving the stunner and cones. WACPAW is appreciative of the field team.
