WACPAW Visit to Kumasi Abattoir with USAID Volunteers

The WACPAW team revisited the Kumasi abattoir, a major facility in Ghana facing persistent welfare issues for cattle, pigs, and goats. Despite prior training in captive bolt stunning techniques, challenges persist, such as animals being mistreated and facilities in disrepair.
During the visit, USAID volunteers assessed critical areas including offloading points and raceways while emphasizing the need for improved animal welfare standards. Praise was given to WACPAW/EonA for their efforts in reducing animal suffering during transport and slaughter, sparking hope for future assistance from USAID.
The collaborative efforts between the teams and abattoir management aim to address the distressing conditions and ensure the well-being of both animals and workers. Special thanks to Victoria, Austin, and Mariah, USAID volunteers, and the Kumasi Abattoir management for their dedication to improving animal welfare in Ghana.
