Echoes of Compassion: Transforming Animal Welfare in Bolga

On a daring mission to Bolga, Ghana, our WACPAW/EonA team faced the horrors of animal cruelty head-on. Awinpala, a donkey butcher, ruthlessly slaughtered up to 24 donkeys a week bought from Burkina Faso, subjecting them to a torturous 14-hour trek without food or water.
At the slaughter slab, the scene was ghastly. Donkeys, frail from starvation and thirst, met their end with a chilling calmness. The stunning process, meant to render them unconscious, turned into a nightmare as older donkeys endured multiple blows before succumbing. The knives used were dull, causing excruciating pain and prompting our intervention for sharper tools.
Witnessing this heart-wrenching display of cruelty, our team demanded drastic changes. Calls for larger hammers and sharper knives echoed through the air, as pleas for basic provisions like water and food grew louder, piercing through the darkness of the slaughterhouse.
Determined to bring justice to these gentle creatures, our team refused to back down. With promises of captive bolt pistols and sharpened knives on the horizon, hope flickered in the eyes of the downtrodden. The stage is set for a triumphant return, where water will flow, feed will be plentiful, and the echoes of suffering will be silenced as we march forward, unyielding in our quest for compassion and change.
