Empowering Students with Plant-Based Diets in the Northern Region of Ghana

West Africa Centre for the Protection of Animal Welfare launched the Thrive Africa Plant-Based Diet Campaign at Kalpohin Anglican JHS B. The project is aimed at educating basic students about the effects of factory farming on the the welfare of animals and the environment and also to introduce the basic school pupils to different plant-based diet within their immediate environment and also demonstrate how to prepare delicious Plant-Based Diet using available and cheap ingredients with zero animal protein. The students after observing the demonstration cooking by our lead chef, were put into twelve groups with each group given a specific plant-based diet menu. The students enthusiastically went into action and within two hours, they were able to serve their meals with the close supervision of the chef. The students were very excited about the project and some of them confessing how they are have been educated and empowered in how to confidently prepare plant-based diets anywhere. In all,the students prepared 12 different plant-based dishes.
The teachers who initially were skeptical about the taste of such foods without animal protein but were amazed at the end of the cooking. In fact the headteacher proposed that we come back and train the teachers on how to prepare these zero animal protein foods.
